At the Cottage with Katie O'Sullivan

Welcome to the cottage, Katie!

It's a lovely day outside, so please take a seat on one of the comfy chairs on the front deck, overlooking the lake.

What can I get you to drink?
Coffee. Lots of coffee to help get the wheels turning!

Tell us a little about yourself.
Sure – here’s a version of my (un)official bio: Katie O’Sullivan lives with her family and big dogs next to the ocean on Cape Cod, drinking way too much coffee and inventing new excuses not to dust. She writes YA and romantic suspense novels, as well as working as an editor, magazine columnist and technical writer. Which explains all the coffee.

Let’s talk about writing and books.

What does your writing space look like?
When I first started writing, I had a laptop at the kitchen counter, so that I could keep an eye on the kids. Blue’s Clues was my friend since the gang would always be quiet for 30 minutes, even the dogs! Since we renovated the house a few years ago, I actually have an office and a real desk – I also have a day job doing tech writing, but we don’t have to talk about that, lol.
I was a Blue's Clues fan too! My daughter loved that show. We always sang the 'mailtime' song together, lol!

If your book was made into a movie, who is your dream cast?
Oh gosh, I actually hadn’t considered that for Crazy About You, believe it or not. How about Chris Pine for Chase Anderson, my environmental scientist, (he did such a wonderful job in The Finest Hours), and maybe Johanna Braddy (from Quantico) for Emma Maguire. I think Bobby Cannavale (from Vinyl and Boardwalk Empire) would be awesome as Tony!
Love Chris and Bobby!

What can we expect from you next? Are you working on anything new?
I’m currently working on another Cape Cod romance, set in Chatham at a 5-star resort. The blurb tentatively sounds like this: Boston Detective Jake Campbell takes his job too seriously… or at least that’s what his girlfriend said on her way out the door. When he’s assigned to go undercover at a Cape Cod resort, he figures getting away from the city will give him time to sort things out. Catching a few drug runners sounds like a vacation after the constant pressures from his family. And his ex. Abigail Duncan feels the pressure of being the only female chef in a five-star restaurant, and the only one of her siblings still living at home to care for their dad. Her staff may be betting on whether she can take the heat dished out by the surly head chef, but she’s got a plan. Only one more summer until she’s got enough saved to open her own place and take charge of her life. Then she’s saddled with an inexperienced cook whose sarcastic attitude drives her crazy, in more ways than one. Stir in a few wannabe mobsters, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Luckily, Abbie has a way with recipes…
Sounds like an interesting story.

Now, let’s get personal!

What is one goal you’ve yet to reach?
A “New York” contract. I love The Wild Rose Press, but we all dream of hitting the big time, right? Seeing our names on the NYT bestseller list and maybe a movie version… you know, a real live dream cast!
Ah yes, I think we all dream about that one.

What is one obsession you possess?
I love all things mermaid. My YA series is about mermaids, and I collect mermaid memorabilia. My husband is really good natured about it, and it works since we live on Cape Cod. He might not be as understanding if we lived somewhere far from the ocean…
Mermaids are cool.

Are you married and/or have any children?
Umm, yes – I may have mentioned my wonderful (indulgent) husband earlier, and we have three great kids. The oldest is off at college, the middle just graduated from high school this year and my youngest just finished his sophomore year. We also have two big dogs who act like toddlers most of the time being willful and stubborn, but they make life interesting.
You have a full house!

Where is your favourite vacation destination?
Even though I literally live at the beach, my dream vacation is sitting on a different beach. Anywhere in the world, although for the last four years that’s been in Mexico. We’ve also been to Hawaii, Jamaica, Florida, California, Georgia… beach vacations are the best.
I totally agree and would love to visit some of those beaches.

Pick None, One or Both.

Tattoos or Piercings? None.
Paperback or eBook? Both.
Twitter or Facebook? Facebook
Tea or Coffee? Both!
Wine or Cocktail? Yes, please!
Early Morning or Late Evening? Morning person.
Optimist or Pessimist? Optimist. I write romance, remember?
Chocolate or vanilla ice cream? Another cocktail :)
Spaghetti or Pizza? Pizza.

Describe yourself in three words:
Chaotic, Creative, Smiling

Thank you for visiting, Katie! It’s been great getting to know you. Please stop by the cottage again soon!
Thanks so much for inviting me!

Where can we keep in touch with you?

Here's a peek at Katie's book,
Crazy About You
Climate scientist Chase Anderson races from one project to the next, unwilling to slow down in his quest to save the world’s oceans. He has no time for family or relationships until he crashes into an impetuous blonde with a quirky sense of humor. One sizzling kiss makes him seriously reevaluate his priorities. And his sanity.

Emma Maguire left her small Cape Cod hometown years ago, seeking the fast pace and anonymity of New York City. She’s not sure what she’s searching for, but when a family crisis brings her home to Provincetown she’s caught in a crazy tangle of half-truths and mistaken identity… and falls for the handsome stranger who broke her cell phone.

Will untangling the web of lies drive them crazy, or lead to something even crazier – like love?

The Wild Rose Press:

  1. Hi Katie: Wow you live on Cape Cod. Always thought that sounded so romantic and inspiring with storms brewing and the waves crashing on the rocks. Your book sounds great. Hope to see you on the NYT list.

    1. Hey, thanks for stopping by! Cape cod is a great place to live... And it's a great tourist destination too. Those two things are sometimes at odds with each other, but life is all about balance, right?

  2. Katie, great to have you visit the cottage today. I've left comments under your answers to add to our conversation. I can't wait to read Crazy About you!

  3. Thanks again for inviting me to the cottage today, Darlene. The interview was a lot of fun!
