December 2018

The night before Jared Dupre's wedding, a specter warns him the demonic witch, Adam Montief, has kidnapped his brother in a centuries-old vendetta unknown to Jared. A powerful witch himself, Jared tracks Adam from New Orleans to a remote island off the coast of Connecticut, where he's given no choice. He must rescue his brother and break his engagement to Kendra O'Connell, or they both die. After complying, Jared engages in a sword fight and believes he has vanquished his foe, but when he returns to New Orleans, he finds evil still threatens all he loves. Kendra, not knowing why Jared broke their engagement, devastated, finds solace in another's arms. With help from an ancestor's spirit, can Jared defeat the dark magic descending over the Big Easy while winning back the woman he loves?

Book Review
To start my reading list for April, I was looking to mix up my reading with a book having a different romance spin and His Magic Touch was just the right book to choose. His Magic Touch is a fun paranormal, fantasy romance with lots of magic. The author weaved a compelling story line with revenge as its focus. There is a great cast of characters, alive and dead, in this story.

The hero, Jared, is at his bachelor party when he hears a voice. Jared leaves the party and meets a spirit who tells him his brother, Philippe, is in trouble. A dark witch, Adam, who believes he is the Chosen One, has Jared’s brother and is seeking revenge for the death of his ancestor, Augustus Montief.

Jared is forced, by Adam, to cancel his wedding to the heroine, Kendra. Through Jared’s journey to find Adam, and rescue his brother, he meets several interesting characters along the way. Oscar, the fisherman, has a great story to tell about the Montiefs’, the Montief Academy, his granddaughter Rose, and Adam wanting to be the supreme master.

There are several points of views in this story. In most spots the POV change was obvious, but in a couple scenes there wasn’t a break, so I was confused by the switch and the speaker.

A mirror helps Jared see his descendant, Angelique, who has a connection to the past, but she reveals little. She was a spotlight in every scene she appeared in.

The author scripted the perfect villain. I disliked Adam immediately and waited for his demise. The sword fight between Jared and Adam is very visual with wind, clouded skies, and lightning, spotlighting the intense battle scene. The scene ends with Adam’s death, but he is not dead! He returns and is dating Kendra.

Jared learns Adam’s quest for vengeance evolved from one of Jared’s ancestors killing one of Adam’s over two hundred years ago.

There were a few times I felt Jared was a bit smug with his comments to Kendra. After dumping her and being away so long, he should have been more sympathetic to her feelings. His comment of “hey baby, you look great” wasn’t a good start to a reunion.

Kendra opens a business with her friends. The author creates another great visual of this store with items of blown glass, pottery, and candles. This is a store I’d want to visit. I found Kendra a bit too anxious to start a new relationship so soon after her breakup with Jared, but she was under the influence of a ‘scent’ so I’ll give her a pass. The author did a good job at leaving subtle clues with a genie bottle and roses.

Jared has a heartfelt chat with his father, who gives Jared a look into their family’s history. Jared’s father suspects Daman (who Jared killed during his battle with Adam) killed his father and brother, providing Jared with another reason to end Adam’s life.

The author created a good intense scene when Kendra goes with Adam to Minerva’s exhibit. The evening does not go well for Kendra.

Another well written and intense scene was when Angelique finally led Jared to clues by having him watch a television that showed the past to when Angelique escaped from Augustus. Jared now needs to find the casket that holds the dagger Angelique used to kill Augustus.

The battle near the end was a page-turner. The appearances of the spirits were entertaining with Marie, Kathleen, Angelique, and Augustus. Such a good scene.

His Magic Touch was filled with ghosts, witches, magic, mystery, and action that kept me spellbound to the end.
