Mushrooms Versus Trees

Did you know that some mushrooms are good for trees? We used to pull out the mushrooms that were under our hemlock and spruce trees, but after watching a documentary on trees, we learned that some mushrooms are actually good for trees.

The are beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, which are important to the forest ecosystem. The fungi wraps around tree roots and provide nutrients that trees struggle to produce on their own. They improve water absorption, act as a barrier against disease, and improve airflow and create healthier soil that supports a stronger root system.

However, not all mushrooms are good for trees. The Honey Fungus are the most destructive and is parasitic that attacks and kills trees.

The mushrooms in the above picture (under our trees) are okay - Amanitas and a cluster of Saprobic - are both are helpful for trees, but not good for pets. Thankfully, these mushrooms are under the trees that are on the far side of the property where the dogs don't roam.

If you have mushrooms under your trees, before removing them, take a picture and search online to see if they are helpful.

Dee's Deliberations #12

Morning is a shiver, afternoon is a steamer.
Autumn's mood swings always deliver.

If you live on the Atlantic Coast, then you know all about the ups and downs of fall temperatures. In the morning, you're layering up in a long sleeve sweater, thick coat, and ear warmers. By lunch time, you're shedding those layers and hauling out your T-shirt and baseball cap. I've even seen people wearing shorts, but that's just crazy, because by the evening hours, you're digging out a hoodie and fluffy socks.

We definitely go from a shiver to a steamer within a few hours, and then back to a shiver...which unfortunately lasts longer than the steamer. The true facts of autumn on the Atlantic Coast.

Monday Moments - The Power of Thankfulness

A Monday Moment from Still Moments Magazine

The Power of Thankfulness

On this Thanksgiving Monday, let’s take a moment to honor the full range of blessings in our lives. The big moments remind us how far we’ve come. The small moments remind us why it matters.

Gratitude isn’t reserved for grand achievements. It lives in small routines, familiar voices, unexpected kindnesses, moments we often rush past, and thrives when we pay attention.

It’s easy to overlook the everyday gifts. The laughter, the routines, and the people who show up for us. These are often the things that carry us through. When we choose not to take them for granted, life feels fuller, steadier, and more meaningful.

Take a small moment to notice, appreciate, and give thanks for everything that enriches your journey.

Celebrating Fall

I haven't shared a graphic design in a few weeks, so I thought I'd post this one I created last year. This art piece celebrates fall with pumpkins and colorful leaves. Fall is also the perfect time to haul out those books you've been wanting to read. Grab a soft blanket, a warm cup of cider or hot chocolate, and get cozy in your favorite spot and relax with a good book.

Be My Guest - Darlene Deluca - Hard Lemonade

Today, I'm happy to welcome a good friend and fellow author, Darlene Deluca. Darlene's new book Hard Lemonade (what a cool title) just released on October 1st. This book sounds so interesting, I'm going to stop talking and let Darlene take the floor.

"Let’s see…will today be a writing day? Or should I focus on editing? Researching? Networking? Promoting? A lot of parts and pieces go into launching a new book. Each element is important. But some are more fun than others.
One thing I like to do is create a Pinterest board for my book. It’s fun to pick out faces/people who fit my vision of my characters. Or put together a wardrobe for my heroine. Or find photos that capture the setting and scenery. It helps the book come alive for me if I can visualize the components. The visual snippets can represent a scene, a hobby or a theme inside the book. For my new women’s fiction novel, Hard Lemonade, the title lends itself to visuals—lemons, lemonade. Those were easy. Some of the others aren’t so obvious.
The board is like a little sneak peek into the book. Hopefully, with enough intriguing tidbits to spark the interest of readers. What does a Scrabble game have to do with the story? Read it and find out. Why strawberry Pop-Tarts? Those are actually very significant to a specific element of the story. Libraries? Those are a big deal. A green glass bowl? Symbolic to the main character. Look for Hard Lemonade in eBook or paperback Oct. 1."
Back Cover Blurb:
Her husband fails. Her marriage fails. Does that make Emily Sherridan a failure?

With high hopes and rose-colored shades, Emily Sherridan leaves her family and friends to build a new life with her screenwriter husband in sunny Los Angeles. There, she learns that love conquers all…until the rent is overdue, the rejections pile up, or the test is positive. As months, then years, go by and Eric’s career fails to launch, Emily is determined to hold everything together. But when he brings danger into their lives, it’s over. When the cops arrive at her doorstep, anguish mixes with anger. She wonders how low they can go—until one of the officers hands her the number to a women’s shelter.

Broke and broken, her dreams are dashed and her confidence is shaken. With Eric’s taunt about running home pounding in her ears, Emily pushes forward though she’s unsure of her direction. She cannot give up. Her daughter deserves more. From rosy dreams to real-life roadblocks, Hard Lemonade is a compelling story of friends, family, and fierce sheroes.

Excerpt:
Julia Nickels ended the call with the hotel in Pasadena and gazed out the window, drumming her fingers on the desk in their home office. She’d expected to be going on a trip this month, but the situation and destination had changed dramatically.
Instead of a fun mother-daughter getaway to see friends on Mackinac Island in Michigan, she was heading west to help Emily set up an apartment—a place Julia had only seen through virtual tour. She hoped the reality would at least somewhat resemble the pictures in the video.
The abrupt change of plans still sent jolts of shock through her. She’d expected to have her daughter home for the summer between her sophomore and junior years of college. Still expected her to walk through the door and chatter about her classes and campus activities—to share her world. Just last night, Julia had started to set the dinner table for three before she remembered Emily was two thousand miles away.
Pressing her lips together, she sagged into the chair and gave herself a minute to mentally regroup. Then she switched out the light and wandered from the office into the kitchen. As she poured a fresh glass of tea, her glance landed on the pile of home magazines stacked in the family room. She could start a project. She had a list—always had a list of home improvement projects awaiting their turn. She had to do something besides mope around the house or bother her friends or sister. No doubt they were all tired of hearing her worries and woes. Heck, she was tired of it, too. But she hadn’t yet figured out how to move on—how to be mother to an adult child who with the speed of whiplash didn’t want to be mothered.
The rumble of the garage door interrupted her thoughts, and she straightened, prepared to greet her husband, and at least pretend everything was fine. When the side door opened, she forced a smile. Fake it ’til you make it.
Joe loosened his tied as he entered the room then planted a light kiss on her lips. “How was your day?” he asked.
It was a standard question, but these days Julia had to try and read his mood and discern whether he wanted the truth or a shallow everything-is-fine response.
“Nothing too exciting,” she told him.
He opened the refrigerator and took out a beer. “Yeah? You get the trip worked out?”
Okay, they were going for real tonight. “Yes, everything’s booked.”
He took a long pull on the beer. “Want to trade places?”
Julia choked out a laugh. Neither one of them had a carefree couple of days ahead of them, but she agreed Joe got the short stick. “No, thanks. I want to see this apartment. I suppose the fact that she’s letting me go out is a good sign.”
“Yeah, I have a hard time feeling grateful about any of this.”
Julia let out a long sigh. “Me, too. But it could’ve been worse. They could’ve eloped or run off to California together. At least we got a wedding. That shows commitment.”

Author Bio:
Darlene Deluca writes contemporary romance that feels real and women’s fiction that explores relationships – what brings people together or keeps them apart. Her intent is to bring to life interesting characters that readers can relate to in real-life situations that combine a little fun, plenty of drama, and big helpings of friendship, love, and self-discovery, and will leave readers either cheering or sighing with a satisfied smile as they turn the final page. The Kansas City author enjoys getting lost in a good story with a glass of tea, a bit of dark chocolate and a warm, sunny beach.

Dee's Deliberations #11

"If you see me clutching a hot drink and a good book,
assume I'm heroically avoiding housework."

Like Dee, I am currently inside and comfy on this cool fall day. But unlike Dee, I haven't been fortunate enough to have a hot drink or read a good book. I wish I could avoid housework, but I need a clean house before I can enjoy the day. After the house was cleaned, I then took the dogs for our thirty minute morning walk, which was cold thanks to the breezy wind. But we're now inside and warm. While the dogs nap, I have edits to do. Maybe I'll get that hot drink and good book later this afternoon. Fingers crossed.

Monday Moments - The Comforts We Reach for When the Weather Turns

A Monday Moment from Still Moments Magazine

The Comforts We Reach for When the Weather Turns

There’s a particular moment each year when the air shifts, just enough to make you pause. A cooler morning, a darker evening, a breeze that carries the faintest hint of change. And almost without thinking, we reach for comfort.

Sometimes it’s something tangible, like the warmth of a favorite sweater, the first hot mug cradled between our hands, or the blanket that lives on the back of the couch all summer waiting for its season to return. Other times it’s quieter, like a recipe we only make when the days get shorter, a playlist that feels like autumn, or a book that pairs best with a chilly night. These small rituals aren’t just habits. They are reminders that transition doesn’t have to be jarring. It can be gentle, even welcome.

Take a small moment to take comfort in the things you instinctively reach for. As the weather turns, we're invited to slow down and reconnect with what makes us feel steady.

Reno Wrap-Up

My office renovation is complete! The above photo is the new flooring. It's so nice! I'm extremely happy with it...and Keefer raised a paw in approval, too. :-)

The below photo shows the old flooring. It originally was a greyish-cream color, but time and sunlight turned it into a dull orange. The original color is a patch in the middle where an area rug once sat.
The below photo is the after.
The reno took longer than expected because not only did we have new flooring installed, we bought a faux wood blind, and a new ceiling light. Then the furniture...dog beds included...had to be brought back into the room. The wolf art work really highlights the space. (I consider the wolf my spirit animal, so I have a few collectables.) My bookcase and desk are on the opposite walls. And I'm waiting for a drawer unit to be returned from my husband's brother, who is reconstructing it.

The construction crew of two guys did a great job. We also had the laundry room flooring changed, so while the rooms aren't large, there was a lot of prep-work and after-work to be done. I'm thrilled to have the job completed...especially my OCD that didn't like all the furniture from two rooms cluttering another room. I can't wait to let the writing inspiration take over in my renovated office. :-)

Out of Office

My office is finally getting new flooring! The room has been emptied. My desk, bookshelves, and dog beds have been moved into the den/music room which is now a cluttered mess, but I keep telling my OCD that it's only for a couple of days.

The new flooring is being installed on Tuesday, and Wednesday will be spent putting everything back and organizing. Unfortunately, Dee wasn't prepared with a new post, so there will be no Dee's Deliberations this week. Fingers crossed my office is fully operational...and posts will resume...on Thursday.

Monday Moments - Embracing Fall’s Quiet Shift

A Monday Moment from Still Moments Magazine

Embracing Fall’s Quiet Shift

Fall arrives softly, reminding us that change doesn’t always need to be loud to be meaningful. The air cools, the colors deepen, and the world seems to exhale. Leaves let go so new growth can come. Days shorten so we can slow down.

Change can feel uncertain, but fall shows us its beauty in what’s shifting, and even more in what’s ahead. In this season, we’re invited to do the same. Pause, notice, and welcome what’s next with a little more grace.

Take a small moment today to carry fall’s lesson. Embrace the shift with curiosity, courage, and calm, and step forward knowing that every season brings its own kind of magic.

Make Cherry Red Your Next Read

Looking for a fun read this weekend? Try some fire and ice.

The above reader reviews are just a few reasons to add Cherry Red to your reading list.

Overstepping the platonic-only rule is as dangerous as fire and ice swirling into steamy combustion.

This summer, Carly Redd focuses on expanding her ice cream business. Coerced into attending her ex's engagement party with firefighter, Noah Harding posing as her fake boyfriend, stirs up a fiery combination, especially when his warm charm melts the ice guarding her heart.

The fire chief’s daughter should wear a Do Not Touch sign, but Noah's interest burned the moment he first saw Carly. Masquerading as her boyfriend is a no-brainer, but convincing Carly to trust him with her heart proves harder than extinguishing a wildfire.

Be My Guest - Ashlyn Chase - Autumn L.A.W.

Today, chatting with me in the den by a cozy fire, is friend and fellow author, Ashlyn Chase, who is celebrating the release of her final book in her four book series, League of Amazing Witches (Winter L.A.W., Spring L.A.W., Summer L.A.W., and Autumn L.A.W.) Each book can be read on its own, but if you like stories about witches, shapeshifters, vampires, romance, and humor, we recommend reading the whole series.
Let's get to know more about book four - Autumn L.A.W.

Autumn L.A.W. Part 1
The Dangerous Duo

Sahara Nadir trusts history, logic, and ancient languages. Lioness Graves trusts visions, instincts, and whatever wild idea pops into her head next. Working together has never been their strong suit, but dark humor gets them through.

When a mysterious obelisk erupts beneath Central Park, the League of Amazing Witches discovers it isn't just an artifact. It's a prison, and something inside is trying to break free.

Sahara, with the help of an unshakably calm mage, and Lioness, with a fearless firefighter who insists on returning her life-saving protection, must put aside their differences before an ancient evil possesses a human host. The future may depend on the one thing they've never mastered: teamwork.

Autumn L.A.W. Part 1 - Excerpt
The world lurched. Not a rumble. More of an honest-to-Goddess tremor that made the trees shiver and sent a flock of birds blasting upward like confetti out of a cannon.
Lioness stumbled forward, catching herself on the caution tape that she and Sahara had not been authorized to put up but did anyway. Her sketchbook slipped from her fingers and flopped onto the grass.
“Okay,” she said aloud, because sometimes narrating her life helped. “That was not normal. That was ‘something is waking up, and it’s out to get us’ levels of abnormal.”
The cracked earth in front of her split again. A sharp seam zigzagged across the ground like a lightning bolt.
“Lioness!” Sahara called, barreling toward her from the far side of the site, ponytail whipping. “Back up. Now.”
Lioness didn’t argue. Mostly because the ground was shifting under her boots and arguing required stability. She hopped backward just as the crack widened and released a gust of air so cold it slapped her across the face.
Autumn L.A.W. Part 2
Crossing the Wrong Witch

Victoria De La Fontaine is a glamorous witch, helicopter pilot, and proud member of the League of Amazing Witches… until a dry-cleaning dispute goes spectacularly wrong. One magical mishap later, she’s trapped in a stranger’s body, wearing stained sweatpants, while the thief runs around in her long legs and designer wardrobe.

Determined to reclaim her identity, Victoria sets out on a globe-trotting search for six rare spell reversal ingredients. Her ally is Duke Masterson, the league’s occult librarian with access to some of the world's rarest magical secrets and a few mysteries of his own.

As the stakes grow higher, Victoria discovers that reversing an ancient curse and getting her body back may be only part of what she needs to do. Learning and liking who she really is could be the life-altering challenge.

Autumn L.A.W. Part 2 - Excerpt
"My mother was keen on my being in beauty pageants. My father wanted nothing to do with that and wanted me to concentrate on my mind, not my body. That was a bone of contention between them. Eventually, they let me make up my own mind about it."
Duke waited, and when she didn't continue, he prompted, "What did you decide?"
"I tried pursuing it and became Miss Québec one year, but the reality wasn't for me. Men leering at me, trying to grope me when my handler wasn’t there. I had to agree with my dad that developing my mind and my magical abilities was far more important than my looks."
Then she laughed hysterically and almost fell off the rock she was sitting on. "You never know what you've got till it's gone."

Author Biography: Ashlyn Chase describes herself as an Almond Joy bar. A little nutty, a little flaky, but basically sweet, wanting only to give her readers a satisfying experience that leaves them smiling. She earned a degree in behavioral sciences, worked with children with disabilities, then worked as a psychiatric RN for fifteen years, and spent four more years with the American Red Cross. Her jobs were great for character building, both as a person and an author. Most authors, whether they know it or not, have a theme… something that unifies their whole booklist. Ashlyn has identified her theme(s) as found families, where being different makes no difference, and characters who reinvent themselves. As an artist, nurse, hypnotherapist, and interior designer, she has reinvented herself many times. Now she is a multi-published, best-selling, award-winning author of humorous paranormal and contemporary romances. And she writes fantasy adventure/magical realism books for young adults and children as E. B. Lorow (Elisabeth Lorow.) She lives in Florida with her true-life superhero husband, who looks like Hugh Jackman if you squint. She and Mr. Amazing have been adopted by two adorable cats.

Dee's Deliberations #10

"Fall is my season...cozy, colourful, and a little crisp."

Welcome to Fall!

Dee has settled into the new season with ease. She's already wearing a warm hoodie and she decorated her window in festive fall decor.

My favorite season is summer, but for the past few years, the humidity level is so high that you can't sit outside, unless you want to drip with sweat in under five minutes. By the middle of September, the humidity lessens and fall arrives. This new season brings a chill in the air, but that means you can get out your favorite soft and fleecy sweaters. And you can't help but love the colors of the leaves. Fall is also the perfect season to go for a drive to that special little town you enjoy visiting to browse the decor in the quaint shops.

Get outside and enjoy the beauty of the fall season, because before you know it, we'll be shoveling snow.

Monday Moments - When the Weight of Being Stuck Feels Too Heavy

A Monday Moment from Still Moments Magazine

When the Weight of Being Stuck Feels Too Heavy

Some days come with a heaviness that’s hard to name. A stuck feeling where you wonder what you should be doing, or what you could change to reach that one dream that feels just out of reach. It’s frustrating, and it’s human. Wanting something deeply while feeling motionless can make you question your direction, your timing, even your purpose.

But life isn’t only about chasing one big dream. Patience is part of the journey, and while that larger vision may take time to unfold, you’re allowed to reach for smaller dreams along the way. Little goals, gentle ambitions, and simple joys. They keep you moving, growing, and hopeful. Stay positive and let those smaller dreams carry you forward while the big one quietly prepares itself.

Take a small moment today to stay open to the possibility that your life can hold more than one beautiful ambition at a time.

A Story Rebirth

In January 2011, I signed my first publishing contract. Secret Cravings accepted my completed manuscript titled, Keeping Secrets. And in August 2011, Keeping Secrets was available for purchase. Unfortunately, three years later, Secret Cravings closed their doors.

With the rights reverted back to me, I sought a new publisher. And in July 2014, I signed a contract with The Wild Rose Press with my book, now titled Twist of Faith. Twist of Faith was released in 2015, and had a great few years and even an extended contract. But at the end of the extension, and after ten years with that publisher, I claimed my rights back to Twist of Faith.

For two years, Twist of Faith sat in a file collecting dust, but I have good news to share! Twist of Faith is getting a rebirth. Edits to polish the story began yesterday! I'm excited to return to my first book publication from fifteen years ago. It's one of my favorite stories, and I can't wait to share it with readers again.

Testing the New Dog Blanket

This is our wicker loveseat in our music/den room. Rambler (our Corso) has claimed the loveseat as his bed, and I'm sure I previously posted a photo of him on it. Every time Rambler would jump up on the loveseat, he'd make a mess of the blanket I had covering it, so I bought a new dog blanket that is super soft and fluffy. I put the new blanket on and pointed to the loveseat...but instead of Rambler jumping up, Keefer (our Lab) decided he wanted to try it first...and he gave it two paws up. No worries about Rambler missing out because he soon claimed back his bed.

Dee Deliberations #9

"I can't remember what I walked into the room for, but I still remember my childhood phone number."

This is so relatable! There are many times when I walk into a room and wonder 'what did I come in here for'. I'll leave and then a few minutes later I remember what I was looking for. And, it is true that I do remember my childhood phone number.

I have to keep a notebook with a few passwords, because every site and app requires a password, and I while I know most of them, the sites I don't go into as often, I need a little reminder. But, I can recite my childhood phone number without even thinking. How crazy is that? Lol.
