Take Five Tuesdays - Careers

Welcome back to my new feature - Take Five Tuesdays!

Today, we're talking about Careers - The ones you had and the ones you wish you had.

First up, these are the career positions I achieved - not including my roles of artist and author.

1. Director of Administration and Marketing
2. Office Manager
3. Pharmacy Benefits Supervisor
4. Payables Accountant
5. Mail Room Clerk

I worked my way up the ladder from a cashier at a pharmacy to achieving my career goal. I am happy to now be retired and spend my time writing books and practicing my art skills.

But, these were my dream jobs.

1. Volcanologist
2. Geologist
3. Astronomer
4. Veterinarian
5. Archaeologist

I would have loved to study volcanoes, space, earth, rocks, and finding artifacts of history, and of course helping animals.

What career paths did you follow and which ones do you wish you followed?

  1. I always wanted to be a veterinarian, too. I became a French teacher and professor, but always dreamed of becoming a writer. And now I have, just like you!

    1. Hi Jennifer, thank you for stopping by! Being a teacher would have been my number six choice. Happy to hear you reached your writing dream too.

  2. This is such an interesting topic. All of your want-to-be career goals were so scientific! From my earliest memory, I wanted to be a writer. I toyed with the idea of being a teacher until it dawned on me I'd have to spend the rest of my life in school! A vocational test once pegged me as a future translator. I would have liked that because I love words. Many years working for a library system were deeply satisfying, though!

    1. Hi Laura, happy you stopped by! You're right, my career goals were scientific, but I was so bad at science, other than the solar system, which was the only part that held my attention, lol. They didn't have studies on rocks when I was in school or I would have definitely gone in that direction instead of administration. A translator sounds awesome, but working in a library is too!

  3. I wanted to be a Speech language pathologist to help kids with speech problems. But there were no programs in my home province of Saskatchewan so I would have had to go away for school, probably to the States, and that just wasn't in the cards. I ended up studying accounting, but years later I wished I would have given library science a go.

    1. Hi Jana, thank you for stopping by. I was in the same boat as you, with no geologist courses in my area. I love that you wanted to be a speech pathologist. The best satisfying job is when you are helping others.

  4. I have been an ESL teacher to children in China, Korean college students doing a semester abroad to the States, and Hispanic immigrants. I am currently a high school U.S. History teacher. I wanted to be a professional ballroom dancer - I would have loved to end up on the cast of Dancing With The Stars! I also was interested in genetics and almost studied biology in college. Being and archeologist in Egypt also sounded thrilling. And for the longest time being a writer was part of my dream careers until it became a reality when TWRP accepted my story! Even though leaving dance when I became a mom was heartbreaking, being a teacher and a writer is so fulfilling. I am very happy where my life is headed.

    1. Hi Chelsey, nice to meet you! Your background is so interesting, and you've been able to travel to do your work. Teaching children is a wonderful career, and it was my number six career goal. Wow, a ballroom dancer! That's great, but I'm happy you found your path as a mom and teacher, and now a writer.

  5. I was a sales clerk in Walgreens, a keypunch operator, a data processing supervisor, IT director and finally CIO for a health system. My dad was a veterinarian so I worked cleaning dog cages, assisting in surgery, clipping poodles, and sending bills for him. My whole career was accidental because I learned to keypunch as a student job and then got a job at the hospital. I was a history major. I'm happily retired and writing now.
